Many magicians work with animal energies to improve their lives. They work to develop intimate relationships with their chosen beast, and form a sort of spiritual communion with the animal world. Throughout history, these animal helpers have taken many forms. They have been called Spirit Guides, Power Animals, Familiars, Totem Animals and many other names. Different cultures and traditions have different views on these animal companions, and there is a hidden power and unique meaning to practically every animal on Earth.

I call these creatures Totems. To me, Totems serve to bolster our own innate powers. They can offer us the strength of the Bear, the cunning of the Fox, the grace of the Stag, and the freedom of the Eagle. Sometimes an animal chooses you, and sometimes it is possible to choose a Totem for yourself. Creatures that appear to you in dreams or in a state of trance are often the essence of the Totem animal reaching out to you. Others appear in the flesh, in the oddest places and times. Other times, it is simply a deep-rooted sense of "knowing".

My Totem Animal

The Moth

The Moth symbolizes mystery, communication and immortality. In many cultures, Moths are said to be the spirits of the dead, returned to Earth as winged creatures of freedom and silent beauty. They often appear to me in strange and unusual places, like driving in the car during broad daylight, while working on my website or while taking a bath. More often than not, they flock to me in numbers, during the full light of day, and almost always choose me as their perch. They are my chosen messengers, and I've often been known to contact other Witches using these creatures as a sort of "psychic carrier pidgeon". I whisper the Magickal name of a fellow magician to the Moth and release it into the air (Gandalf does a similar thing in Fellowship of the Ring), and within hours the target of my message calls or Emails me.

The photo above was taken recently when a gorgeous white moth touched down on my hand and promptly went to sleep on my finger. It stayed there, motionless for about an hour and a half before it got up and explored my hand for the entire evening. I snapped the photo using my webcam.
